A young jackdaw, named Frank, is being nursed back to health at a Nottinghamshire rescue centre after being found in a sorry state. He has received help from a fellow fledgling, who has taken on a parental role to aid his recovery.

  • Frank, a six-week-old jackdaw, was rescued in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire

  • A fellow fledgling has taken on a parental role to help Frank's recovery

A young jackdaw, named Frank, is being nursed back to health at the Brinsley Animal Rescue in Nottinghamshire after being found in a sorry state. Frank, believed to be six weeks old, was taken in by the rescue centre after being discovered in Hucknall, with missing feathers and weighing half the size of a fledgling of his age.

The rescue centre's staff have named Frank after American singer and actor Frank Sinatra, who was known as 'Ol' Blue Eyes'. Staff at the centre are unsure what caused Frank's condition, but believe it could be due to malnutrition or liver disease.

While quarantined for treatment and initial recovery, Frank was observed calling out to his new friend, a fellow jackdaw who has taken on a parental role to aid his recovery. The older fledgling has started to feed Frank, despite being at a similar stage of growth where they would normally still be reliant on their parents for food.

Staff at the rescue centre are amazed by the interaction between the two young birds, with Frank watching and copying the older fledgling's every move. Blood samples could be used to better understand Frank's condition, but staff are waiting until he is stronger before any tests are done.
