England secured an 89-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first one-day international at Chester-le-Street, continuing their recent success in white-ball cricket. Will Jacks was instrumental, delivering a career-best bowling performance of 5-22 and contributing 46 not out with the bat.
England, batting first, were bowled out for 265 in 48.1 overs. Harry Brook top-scored with 67, supported by Joe Root's 44. Sri Lanka's debutant leg-spinner Sachindu Colombage took 3-44.
In response, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 176 in 37 overs. Jacks' bowling efforts, which included the wickets of Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka, were key to limiting Sri Lanka's score. England have now won 10 consecutive white-ball matches against Sri Lanka this year.
The second match of the three-game series is scheduled for Thursday at Headingley, where England could seal a third consecutive ODI series win with a game to spare.
