Rising star Jackson Koivun has secured his breakthrough PGA Tour victory at the 3M Open, triumphing over world number one Scottie Scheffler in only his third professional appearance. The 21-year-old American delivered a masterclass performance on Sunday at the TPC Twin Cities, establishing a new tournament record with an impressive 25-under 259 total.
Koivun, who recently led Auburn to the NCAA Championship last month, maintained a composed and error-free approach throughout a sweltering final round. Following a superb 61 on Saturday that gave him a three-shot advantage, he carded a bogey-free five-under on Sunday, confidently closing out the event despite the looming presence of Scheffler.
World number one Scottie Scheffler mounted a significant challenge, posting a strong 63 while playing several groups ahead. However, his late surge was not enough to catch the young leader, and he ultimately finished as runner-up for the fourth time this season. Scheffler's only victory this year came at The American Express in California earlier in the season.
Koivun's record-breaking performance surpassed the previous 3M Open best of 24-under 260, set by Lee Hodges in 2023. The young talent, who had previously made 10 starts on tour as an amateur, missed the cut at the John Deere Classic and tied for 10th at the ISCO Championship earlier this month, showcasing a rapid ascent in his professional career.
The victory comes with a significant prize of £1,186,000 for Koivun. Crucially for his immediate future on the tour, this win has propelled him 124 spots up the FedEx Cup standings, placing him in 70th position. This puts him just above the cut-off for the upcoming playoffs, with only two regular season events remaining on the schedule. Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Chandler Phillips, and Denny McCarthy all tied for third place, finishing five shots behind Koivun at 20 under.
