Sussex all-rounder James Coles has secured his first call-up to the England T20 squad, joining the team for next month's five-match series against India. The 22-year-old's selection marks a significant milestone in his promising career, following a period of impressive displays across various cricketing formats.
Coles, known for his versatile left-arm spin and consistent batting in the top three for Sussex in this year's Vitality Blast, is widely regarded as a dynamic white-ball talent. His profile soared earlier this year when he attracted the highest bid of £390,000 at the inaugural Hundred player auction, securing his place with London Spirit. He also recently featured for Andrew Flintoff’s England Lions against South Africa, further cementing his credentials.
The expanded 17-member squad for the series, which commences in Durham just two days after the scheduled conclusion of the third Test against New Zealand, reflects an anticipation of potential workload management for players. With six T20 squad members also involved in the Test match, rotation is expected to ensure player welfare and optimal performance.
National selector Marcus North commented on the inclusion, stating, "James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place following his performances with the England Lions and in T20 competitions here and abroad during the past 12 months." North added that the larger squad size was chosen to accommodate the tight schedule, allowing for flexibility in team selection.
The squad also sees the inclusion of Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker, who recently made their Test debuts, alongside Saqid Mahmood, who returns to the national side after his last appearance against India in January 2025. However, pace bowlers Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton will miss the series as they continue their recovery from wrist and thigh injuries, respectively, sustained during their participation in the Indian Premier League. Ben Duckett has been omitted from the squad, having served as a reserve batter for England during the T20 World Cup earlier this year, where England reached the semi-finals before being defeated by eventual champions India.
The series will be a crucial test for England, providing an opportunity to assess new talent and refine strategies against a strong Indian side. The matches will be closely watched by fans across the UK, eager to see how the revamped squad performs on home soil.
