Jannik Sinner ruled out of US Open with knee injury

World No 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the US Open due to a right knee issue, as defending champion Carlos Alcaraz prepares to return from a wrist injury.

  • Sinner confirmed his withdrawal in a social media statement.
  • He has not played since winning Wimbledon in July.
  • Alcaraz has been out since April with a wrist injury.

World No 1 and Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner has been ruled out of the US Open due to a knee injury.

Sinner, who won the US Open in 2024 and was runner-up last year, confirmed the decision in a statement on social media. The 25-year-old has not played since defending his Wimbledon title in July, when he beat Alexander Zverev to claim his fifth grand slam.

He skipped two successive ATP Masters events and pulled out of the Cincinnati warm-up, raising concerns. In his statement, Sinner said: "Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year."

His withdrawal comes as defending champion Carlos Alcaraz prepares to return from a wrist injury that has kept him out for four months. Alcaraz missed the French Open and Wimbledon, and has not played since April.

Novak Djokovic, who suffered a surprise second-round defeat at the Cincinnati Open, may see this as another chance to win a record 25th grand slam title.

Why this matters: Sinner's absence removes the world No 1 from the US Open draw, leaving the men's tournament wide open.

What this means for you: Tennis fans will not see Sinner compete at the US Open this year.
