Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist, has died at the age of 97. Her death occurred on 14 August in a Tokyo hospital, with the announcement made by her studio on Thursday.
Kusama, who lived in a psychiatric hospital for decades, was known for her avant-garde artistic creations, which spanned visual art, performance, fiction, and poetry. Her studio stated that she continued to paint until her final days.
Her distinctive style included psychedelic colour schemes and mirrored installations, which gained a large audience. Kusama's work often explored themes of infinity and "self-obliteration", inspired by her hallucinations.
