Japanese authorities have conducted raids on the nation's four largest breweries amidst suspicions of price collusion. The Fair Trade Commission this week searched the offices of Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery, Suntory Beer, and Sapporo Breweries.
These four companies collectively control more than 90% of Japan's domestic beer market. They are suspected of violating anti-monopoly law by allegedly coordinating on the timing and scale of retail price increases for beer and other beverages.
Hiroo Iwanari, the commission's secretary general, confirmed the investigation has commenced. The breweries involved have stated their intention to cooperate with authorities.
Media reports indicate that the alleged cartel could have resulted in consumers paying higher prices. This investigation follows a similar probe three months ago into six Japanese ice-cream makers over cartel allegations.
