West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen has confirmed his decision to stay with the club following their relegation from the Premier League last season. The 29-year-old forward, who was widely expected to depart amid interest from top-flight clubs, has instead committed his future to the Hammers, vowing to lead their charge back to the Premier League.
Bowen's commitment comes as a significant boost for West Ham, who are grappling with the fallout of relegation, including the confirmed departure of Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham for an reported £85 million and anticipated moves for other key players such as Crysencio Summerville. Speaking on his decision, Bowen stated, "The main motivation for me is staying and bringing this club back into the Premier League where we belong. It hurt everyone and it should hurt everyone. It was such a disappointing thing but it doesn't last forever.”
The England international revealed that a direct meeting with West Ham's majority shareholder, Daniel Kretinsky, and his right-hand man, Jiri Svarc, in Prague was instrumental in his decision. "We flew out to Prague in the Czech Republic to meet with Daniel and Jiri. The ambition that I got from them in terms of the direction the club wants to move in interested me a lot," Bowen explained. He added that the club holds deep personal significance for him, having spent six and a half years there, transitioning from a Championship player to captain.
Bowen's consistent performance has been a highlight for West Ham, with last season marking his fifth consecutive campaign hitting double digits for goals, netting 11 and providing 12 assists. Across 280 appearances for the club, he has amassed 85 goals and 63 assists, notably scoring the winning goal in the club's 2023 Conference League triumph – their first major trophy in 43 years. Despite his strong club form and 22 England caps, Bowen was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for this summer’s World Cup.
His decision provides a much-needed foundation as West Ham prepare for life in the Championship. The club is set to kick off their new season with an away fixture against Burnley on 16 August, with fans now hopeful that Bowen's leadership and goal-scoring prowess can spearhead an immediate return to the Premier League.
