Hip-hop icon Jay-Z has addressed the significant three-hour delay that impacted the final show of his Yankee Stadium residency. The concert, which was part of a series celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut album 'Reasonable Doubt' and the 25th anniversary of 'The Blueprint', did not begin until shortly after midnight on Sunday, eventually concluding around 2:45 am.
Thousands of fans were left waiting outside the New York City venue, leading to widespread frustration. Upon taking the stage, the 56-year-old rapper, born Shawn Carter, explained that the delay was a necessary measure to ensure crowd safety. He told the audience that approximately 10,000 people were outside the venue, and gates had to be closed after some individuals attempted to rush the doors. "I don't want to start the music and people get trampled. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everyone was okay," he stated.
Roc Nation, Jay-Z's label, later issued a statement confirming the rapper's explanation. They detailed that "hundreds of individuals in large groups — who did not have tickets to tonight’s performance — stormed over peaceful ticketholders, and in some cases, breached security." This led to all stadium entrances being closed for an extended period. Roc Nation, alongside the Yankees and Live Nation, expressed gratitude to the NYPD and Yankee Stadium security for their handling of the situation, prioritising attendee welfare.
Despite the initial disruption, the 'Extra Innings' concert ultimately proved to be a memorable event for those inside. The audience reportedly became quickly forgiving once the show commenced, which featured an array of high-profile guest appearances. Rihanna made a rare concert appearance, joining Jay-Z for "Run This Town" and performing her track "Bitch Better Have My Money." His wife, Beyoncé, also performed "Drunk In Love," while Teyana Taylor, Usher, and Pharrell Williams also surprised fans.
The Yankee Stadium shows had generated considerable excitement, with previous nights featuring appearances from Beyoncé, their daughter Blue Ivy, Nas, Alicia Keys, and Eminem. Jay-Z is set to continue his anniversary celebrations with upcoming performances scheduled in London, Paris, and Los Angeles, bringing the spectacle closer to his UK fanbase.
