Jean Clark, a significant figure in Labour politics in Harlow, Essex, has died at the age of 92. Clark was a successful teacher, lecturer, and community activist in the town.
After moving to Harlow in the 1950s as an English teacher, Clark became a Labour party member and was involved with Victory for Socialism, a leftwing pressure group. This group supported Stan Newens' election as Harlow’s Labour MP in 1964.
Clark also played a leading role in the Harlow Tenants’ Action group, which organised a rent strike in 1968 against Harlow Development Corporation’s rent increases, leading to their reduction. She later served as secretary of the constituency party and was a longstanding Labour councillor in Harlow until her retirement in 2023. Harlow council held a special tribute to her.
