Jean-Philippe Mateta challenges Crystal Palace contract validity with Fifa

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is disputing the validity of the final 10 months of his contract, taking his case to Fifa after an independent tribunal ruled against him.

  • Jean-Philippe Mateta is challenging the validity of the final 10 months of his Crystal Palace contract, which is due to expire in June 2027.
  • Mateta's case was heard by an independent tribunal under Premier League rules, which reportedly found his contract remained binding.
  • Fifa has ruled that overruling the contract is not within its jurisdiction.

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is arguing that the remainder of his contract with the club is invalid and has taken his case to Fifa. The France international is challenging the validity of the final 10 months of his deal, which is set to expire in June 2027.

Mateta, who signed permanently for Palace in January 2022, had a 12-month extension option activated by the club in 2024. However, the 29-year-old claims this optional extra year should be void.

An independent tribunal under Premier League rules reportedly heard Mateta's case and it is understood his contract remained binding. He subsequently took his argument to Fifa, the world football governing body, which ruled earlier this week that it does not have jurisdiction to overrule the contract.
