A pattern of hypocrisy has been revealed in the life of former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson, who is currently serving a prison sentence for child sex offences. The disturbing details, uncovered by a recent investigation by BBC NI Spotlight, portray a politician who simultaneously promoted traditionalist values while leading a secret and damaging double life.
Among the incidents highlighted is Donaldson's visit to a London sauna in 2006, which he had publicly condemned as immoral in the Northern Ireland Assembly that same year. Two senior Police Service of Northern Ireland detectives confirmed seeing him enter the venue, which was marketed towards gay men. Although this conduct may not have been explicitly illegal at the time, it paints a picture of a profound 'double life' maintained by Donaldson.
Former DUP MP Ian Paisley has also disclosed that he was approached in 2019 by a young woman who alleged she had been "exploited" by Donaldson. Paisley described her as a victim and informed Edwin Poots, another leadership contender at the time, about her concerns. Although the woman did not wish to make a formal complaint, Poots confirmed that their wishes were respected.
The DUP has issued a statement expressing shock at the allegations, stating they had no prior knowledge of these issues and received no internal or external complaints about Donaldson's behaviour. Communities Minister Gordon Lyons described him as a "duplicitous individual" and acknowledged the long-term impact on the victims, saying the party aimed to move forward.
BBC NI Spotlight attempted to contact Donaldson regarding the allegations before broadcasting the story but did not receive a response. The investigation adds a complex layer to our understanding of a politician whose career spanned nearly three decades in Westminster and has sent shockwaves through Northern Ireland's political landscape.
