Former 1500m world champion Jenny Simpson has announced she will not return to running after experiencing a cardiac arrest in June. The 39-year-old collapsed during a track event in North Carolina while pacing a mile group.

Simpson was given CPR and placed on life support due to issues with her heart and lungs. She revealed on Instagram on Thursday that she has been diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a condition that caused "dangerous heart rhythms that ultimately caused my heart to stop."

She stated that due to this condition, it would be dangerous for her to resume running, marking the end of that chapter in her life. Simpson, who won a world title in 2011 and an Olympic bronze in 2016, continues to work in an executive role for running company Fleet Feet.
