Jerusalem's ancient fabric is beginning to fray, as a centuries-old status quo on one of Islam's most revered sites hangs precariously in the balance. The delicate agreement governing religious practices at al-Aqsa mosque compound, shared by Muslims and Jews, has been steadily eroded by Israeli nationalists flouting its well-established conventions. This precarious shift comes against the backdrop of decades-long tensions in the region, where al-Aqsa compound's custodianship is a contentious issue.
For centuries, the Jordanian-administered Islamic Waqf has held custodianship over the site under the longstanding Status Quo agreement. This arrangement permits non-Muslims to visit but explicitly prohibits them from praying or conducting religious rites within its sacred walls. However, reports suggest that figures like right-wing nationalist politician Moshe Feiglin and others are now openly defying these rules by engaging in prayer and other religious activities.
Even the Israeli Chief Rabbinate and most ultra-Orthodox rabbis prohibit Jewish prayer on the site due to strict adherence to Jewish law. Despite this, individual actions hint at a growing challenge to the established order, raising concerns that any formal alteration to the Status Quo could reignite long-standing tensions between Muslim and Jewish communities.
Reports from outlets like Middle East Eye have sparked fears of a potential shift in policy, with some sources suggesting that Israeli and US officials are working towards abandoning the Status Quo. This would see the al-Aqsa compound declared a "multi-faith centre," paving the way for large-scale Jewish prayer and gradually transferring governance to Israel. In response, the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has denied any involvement in such plans, while the Israeli prime minister's office continues to affirm that no change has been made to the Status Quo.
Dr Mustafa Abu Sway, Deputy Head of the Islamic Waqf Council, has warned against any changes, stating that "peace without leaving al-Aqsa Mosque alone is simply opening a Pandora's box." He echoes concerns over jeopardising regional peace, given the site's complex history as a flashpoint for conflict.
