John McEntee appointed Monaghan manager, succeeding Gabriel Bannigan

Former All-Ireland winner John McEntee has been named the new Monaghan manager, replacing Gabriel Bannigan.

  • John McEntee's appointment was ratified at a county board meeting on Monday night.
  • McEntee previously led Monaghan club Inniskeen for four seasons, reaching two county finals.
  • Gabriel Bannigan departed in August after two years, during which Monaghan won the Division Two title in 2025.

John McEntee, an All-Ireland winner with Armagh in 2002, has taken his first inter-county management role as he steps in to lead Monaghan. His appointment was confirmed at a county board meeting on Monday night.

McEntee replaces Gabriel Bannigan, who announced his departure in August after two years. Bannigan had stated that "the goalposts have moved" regarding his exit.

Before this role, McEntee spent four seasons managing Monaghan club Inniskeen, guiding them to county finals in 2023 and 2025. He also oversaw Clontibret's Monaghan SFC triumph in 2019 and co-managed Crossmaglen Rangers to an Ulster title in 2015.

Under Bannigan, Monaghan secured the Division Two title in 2025 and reached consecutive All-Ireland quarter-finals. However, the team was relegated from Division One this year without picking up a point.
