Wakefield Trinity have clinched their first Super League title in 58 years, overcoming Warrington 23-10 in a thrilling Grand Final at a sold-out Old Trafford. Veteran winger Tom Johnstone, 31, was instrumental in the victory, scoring Trinity’s fourth try to seal the triumph and earning the Rob Burrow Trophy for man of the match.
Johnstone, who made his Wakefield debut in 2015, expressed his long-held dream of winning the title, stating, “I’ve wanted it for a long time. I’ve had to wait a little bit, but the 31-year-old has finally got it done.” He also hinted at further success for the club, noting that “We’ve got some good people coming in next year and we’re holding most of the core group.”
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Wakefield, who were at the bottom of the table in 2015 and faced relegation in 2023 before local millionaire Matt Ellis took control. Warrington head coach Sam Burgess acknowledged the pain of his side's fifth Grand Final defeat, which extends their own title drought beyond 71 years, but expressed optimism for the future, stating, “I’d say it’s the beginning.”
