José Mourinho's highly anticipated return to Real Madrid as manager has been officially confirmed, marking a significant shift in European football. The 63-year-old Portuguese tactician, who previously managed the club between 2010 and 2013, joins the 15-time European champions from Benfica on a three-year contract. His official start date is set for 13th July, coinciding with the commencement of pre-season training.
This blockbuster appointment comes after a tumultuous season for Real Madrid, which saw manager Xabi Alonso sacked in January amidst reports of player unrest. Interim head coach Álvaro Arbeloa was unable to reverse the team's fortunes, as Real exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage to Bayern Munich and saw Barcelona comfortably secure the La Liga title. Reports of disharmony within the squad also persisted, notably an incident involving Fede Valverde requiring stitches after a confrontation with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, recently re-elected to his post, reportedly made Mourinho his primary target. Pérez will be hoping that Mourinho, renowned for his strong leadership and tactical acumen, can restore order to the dressing room and bring renewed success on the pitch. During his previous tenure at Real Madrid, Mourinho secured the La Liga title in the 2011-12 season and the Copa del Rey in 2010-11.
Mourinho's career boasts an impressive array of achievements, including Champions League victories with Porto and Inter Milan, as well as three Premier League titles across two spells with Chelsea. He returned to Benfica, where he began his managerial career, last September, guiding them to an unbeaten league season, though this was only sufficient for a third-place finish. He has also had recent stints managing Fenerbahce in Turkey and Roma in Italy.
Meanwhile, Benfica has confirmed they will receive €15 million (approximately £13 million) in compensation from Real Madrid for Mourinho's services. The Portuguese club has also announced that Marco Silva, who recently departed Fulham after five years, will take over as their new manager on a two-year deal with an option for a further season.
