A new decorating trend, described as 'reverse decluttering', has reportedly been inspired by actor Dame Judi Dench. Radio presenter Jo Whiley, after interviewing Dench for her RHS Roots podcast, noted that Dench's house was "packed with family photographs, children’s drawings and memories everywhere".
Whiley stated that seeing Dench's home reminded her that "lived-in spaces are often the most beautiful because they reflect a lifetime of love, family and shared experiences." This prompted Whiley to display her own family photographs after previously decluttering.
The concept of 'reverse decluttering' is supported by academic findings. A review article in Current Opinion in Psychology indicated that certain objects help to bring significant memories to mind. Additionally, another study found that possessions could evoke pride.
