Julián Alvarez booed by Atlético Madrid fans amid Barcelona transfer saga

Julián Alvarez faced strong disapproval from Atlético Madrid supporters during their 2-2 draw with Villarreal, following his stated desire to join Barcelona.

  • Atlético Madrid drew 2-2 with Villarreal in their first home game of the season.
  • Julián Alvarez was whistled by fans throughout the match, including when his name was announced and when he came on.
  • Alvarez has a contract until June 2030 with a €500m buyout clause, and Atlético Madrid has stated they will not sell him to Barcelona.

Julián Alvarez was met with whistles and shouts from Atlético Madrid supporters during the club's 2-2 home draw against Villarreal. Fans expressed their displeasure when his name was read out, during his warm-up, and when he entered the game, marking his first appearance in red and white since April.

Following the match, Alvarez walked off the pitch alone, accompanied by whistles from the crowd, while his teammates gathered elsewhere. This public display of discontent comes after Alvarez declared his "dream" to leave Atlético Madrid for Barcelona.

The transfer situation remains at an impasse. Alvarez reportedly wishes to join Barcelona, and Barcelona are keen to sign him. However, Alvarez is under contract with Atlético until June 2030, with a €500m buyout clause, and Atlético Madrid has firmly stated they will not sell him, especially not to Barcelona.

Atlético's chief executive, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, has insisted the club will not sell Alvarez at any price, stating they have informed Alvarez, his agent, and Barcelona of this decision. Barcelona's president, Joan Laporta, claimed an "important" offer had been made, but Atlético dismissed it and reported Barcelona to the RFEF (Spanish Football Federation).
