Horse racing's summer spectacle is building towards a thrilling crescendo as Super Saturday descends upon Newmarket, Ascot, and York. A whopping dozen races will light up the ITV Racing schedule, with the Group One July Cup at Newmarket taking centre stage – and it's anyone's guess whether Karl Burke's three-year-old filly Venetian Sun will lead from the front or drop out of contention altogether. The Commonwealth Cup winner at Royal Ascot last month was favourite to win, but concerns over her performance on quick ground have raised eyebrows; a final decision on her participation hangs in the balance – with Tony Bloom's racing manager Sean Graham set to make his call after the first race.
The stage is also set for some serious showdowns at Ascot. Horses drawn on the near side and those with a penchant for prominent positioning are expected to shine in the 1.55pm handicap, where Schrodinger’s Cat, priced at around 10-1, looks primed to pounce after a narrow defeat at York last month. Meanwhile, Behike, who struggled from a poor draw at the Royal meeting, should fare better today, while Havana Hurricane faces a stern test with his hold-up running style.
Newmarket's maiden event, featuring on ITV for just the second time in its illustrious history, has a track record of churning out future stars. Last year's runner-up Constitution River went on to become this term's leading three-year-old, while 2023 winner Field Of Gold is no stranger to Group One glory. This year, Aidan O’Brien’s Haffner – who finished second to Abraham Lincoln in the Curragh stakes – takes centre stage as favourite, but debutants Al Wathba and Subscription are also vying for the top prize, with Appleby seeking his fifth success in this contest since 2013.
Elsewhere, attention turns to the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket (4.00pm), where Abraham Lincoln will look to lay down a marker as a potential 2,000 Guineas contender. At Ascot (2.27pm), the second and fourth-placed horses from last month's Group One Queen Anne Stakes will renew their rivalry over the same track and trip – setting the scene for some serious showdowns across the day's televised racing.
