A judge has instructed the jury in the Lindsay Clancy trial to continue deliberations after jurors indicated they could not reach a unanimous decision. Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse, has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility in Massachusetts.
Clancy does not deny strangling her three children but states that postpartum psychosis was the cause of her actions. Prosecutors contend that she was aware of her actions. The jury began deliberations on Thursday, making Tuesday the fourth day of the process.
The jury has the option to convict Clancy of murder or manslaughter, or to acquit her if they believe her deteriorating mental health was responsible. A conviction could result in a life prison sentence. If acquitted, a judge could still order her confinement to a mental health facility if an evaluation determines she poses a danger to the public.
