Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has brought an immediate end to his international cricket career, announcing his retirement and stepping away from the ongoing Test series against England. The decision concludes a remarkable 16-year tenure that saw him become one of the sport's most respected figures and a national hero.
Williamson, aged 35, leaves the international stage having achieved numerous accolades, most notably leading the Black Caps to victory in the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021. His career began in the longest format against India in November 2010. Over 110 Test matches, he amassed 9,515 runs at an impressive average of 54.06. Across all formats, Williamson is New Zealand's all-time leading international run-scorer, with a total of 19,346 runs, including 48 centuries and six double-centuries.
In a statement, Williamson reflected on his time, saying, “I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand.” He added that continuing with anything less than his full commitment “wouldn’t be right” and expressed gratitude for being able to step away on his own terms. He also conveyed optimism for the future of the New Zealand squad, citing the “huge amount of talent” within the team.
Williamson's captaincy spanned across formats between 2016 and 2024, leading the Test side in 40 matches, culminating in the historic 2021 World Test Championship final triumph over India. As captain, he secured 22 Test victories and scored 11 hundreds before relinquishing the leadership role in 2022. His individual honours include being named the International Cricket Council’s cricketer of 2015 and Test player of 2019, alongside a record four Sir Richard Hadlee Medals for New Zealand's best performer.
