Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was released from jail on Tuesday, reportedly making a swift exit to avoid reporters. Video footage from KDFW showed the American football player walking backwards inside the facility before smiling and running out the door, evading questions from the gathered press.
The 26-year-old had been incarcerated since 19th May after testing positive for THC, a breach of his probation terms. This probation was imposed following his involvement in a serious car crash on a Texas highway that resulted in injuries to several individuals.
Prior to commencing his sentence, Rice underwent surgery for inflammation in his right knee. A judge granted a request from his legal team for him to receive medical treatment at Parkland Hospital whilst serving his time. This arrangement allowed him to address his injury concurrently with his sentence.
Rice's absence from the team's activities has been significant, causing him to miss all of the Chiefs' voluntary offseason workouts and their mandatory minicamp. However, Chiefs coach Andy Reid has expressed his expectation for Rice to join the team for training camp, which is scheduled for late July.
Coach Reid indicated that the team's trainer, Rick Burkholder, had been in regular contact with Rice, ensuring that his rehabilitation was properly managed alongside his time in jail. Reid highlighted the importance of these 'life lessons' for Rice, stating that everyone is given opportunities to learn and that Rice is currently in that position.
The Chiefs are relying on Rice to strengthen their offensive line, particularly after their challenging 6-11 finish last season. Despite contributing to their 2023 Super Bowl victory with 156 catches for 1,797 yards and 14 touchdowns, Rice has also faced game absences due to suspensions and injuries, playing only 28 games over three seasons.
