Katalyst Space robot tumbles out of control during NASA telescope mission

A robot launched to raise NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory to a higher orbit is now tumbling out of control, according to NASA and the company Katalyst Space.

A robot from Katalyst Space, tasked with raising NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory to a higher orbit, is currently tumbling out of control. Both NASA and Katalyst Space confirmed the issues today, 28 July 2026.

The LINK spacecraft, launched on 3 July, has experienced problems controlling its alignment. NASA reported that two of its three reaction wheels have failed, alongside issues with one of its thruster systems. This has led to the spacecraft spinning, making communication difficult.

Flight controllers are working to recover the spacecraft. They have begun using another set of thrusters to slow the spin and have reported seeing the intended effect. The mission is notable as it is the first time NASA has hired a private company to lift one of its observatories to extend its operational lifespan.
