Parking bays at Kendal's Westmorland Shopping Centre are being widened in response to driver complaints that they are too narrow for modern vehicles. Westmorland and Furness Council stated that drivers reported difficulty fitting into spaces and exiting their cars.
New lines will expand the standard bays from 2.4m (7.8ft) to 2.6m (8.5ft). Where space allows, some bays located between structural pillars will be widened to more than 3m (9.8ft).
The council confirmed that this revised layout will result in fewer spaces but aims to provide a more practical and user-friendly experience for motorists. The work is scheduled to begin on Monday, starting on Level 7 and moving downwards, with temporary closures affecting one floor at a time. All disabled parking bays will remain open and are unaffected.
