A routine van journey along a Kent coastal road took an extraordinary turn for one motorist on 16 June, when he found himself at the forefront of a high-speed police chase. The dramatic sequence of events was captured by bodycam footage released by Kent Police, which showcases the remarkable moment a member of the public stepped in to assist law enforcement.
The officer, armed and pursuing an individual who had fled a property following an alleged serious assault, was in hot pursuit. The suspect had entered a Margate park, appearing to attempt evasion from police patrols, when the van driver pulled over and called out, "Get in the back. Get in the back." The officer quickly boarded the vehicle, instructing the driver to "Go, go, go!" and urging him to follow the pursuing officer.
As the van sped off in pursuit of the suspect, the officer directed the driver to overtake, with the motorist reassuringly informing him, "I won't crash, sir," after being cautioned to drive safely. This swift action by the driver effectively closed the gap on the suspect, who was believed to be close to evading capture.
The pursuit concluded when the driver pulled up ahead of the suspect, allowing the officer to exit and order the individual to stop and place their hands on their head, leading to an immediate arrest. A subsequent clip shows the officer shaking the driver's hand in gratitude for his help, with the motorist responding nonchalantly, "I am just glad I could be of service. That was quite exhilarating."
Armed policing Superintendent Will Lay praised the driver's actions, stating that the "selfless actions of this responsible and public-spirited driver" were instrumental in apprehending the dangerous individual. He highlighted that the successful arrest "may not have been possible without the member of the public and his vehicle," adding that the driver "should feel proud of his contribution to keeping his community safe."
