Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola death, involving a Kenyan citizen who had resided in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the past seven years. Health Minister Aden Duale stated that the patient, who became ill a month ago and received treatment in several hospitals in DR Congo, died days after arriving in Nairobi.
The patient boarded a flight on Saturday and underwent standard public screening at Nairobi's main airport. A relative then transferred the individual to a city hospital, where tests confirmed positive for Ebola Bundibugyo virus.
More than 4,000 people have died from Ebola in DR Congo this year, marking what is described as the second most deadly known outbreak of the disease.
