A widespread fuel leak in the River Taff has seen kerosene spread almost 2.5 miles (4km) along the waterway. Natural Resources Wales (NRW) stated the pollution was first reported on Saturday morning, affecting at least one mile (1.6km) of the river.
Public Health Wales has advised people living nearby to keep their windows and doors closed, avoid any contact with the water, and to call NHS 111 if they feel unwell. Residents reported a strong smell, with one describing it as like a petrol station.
NRW is investigating the source of the incident and working to stop the pollution. Absorbent materials have been deployed to contain the leak. One resident reported that South Wales Fire and Rescue went to the GE site on Friday, stopping the flow, and that up to 25,000 litres of kerosene reportedly entered the river.
NRW has stated that the pollution is discharging from an underground surface water drainage system, and the amount of fuel has reduced significantly. Water samples have been collected to assess the damage.
