A unique Harley-Davidson motorcycle once owned by the late football legend Kevin Keegan has been sold at auction for just over £35,000, mere days after his death at the age of 75. The 1990 Sportster, which fetched precisely £35,075, features a distinctive custom design personally commissioned by Keegan, drawing inspiration from his iconic tenure at Newcastle United.
The motorcycle, an XLH 1200 Sportster model, boasts several modifications including custom drag bars, billet levers, and a shortened mudguard. It was originally purchased from a dealership in Newcastle and even spent time on display at the Newcastle Breweries Museum before taking pride of place on a custom-made plinth within Keegan's own home office. Recently recommissioned by specialists at Motor Restoration, the bike was reported to be in excellent condition with new tyres at the time of the sale.
Keegan had instructed H&H Classics to sell the motorcycle five months prior to his passing. The winning bid came from an American-domiciled British businessman, securing a piece of sporting memorabilia with significant emotional resonance. H&H Classics confirmed that some proceeds from the sale would be donated to a cancer charity, understood to be Cancer Research UK, a fitting tribute given Keegan's battle with stage four cancer.
Mike Davis, senior motorcycle specialist at H&H Classics, commented on the palpable enthusiasm from bidders, stating, “You could feel the passion from the bidders who were keen to show their appreciation for one of this country’s greatest ever footballers.” This sentiment underscores the enduring affection for Keegan, who was a revered figure not only at Newcastle but also during his playing days at Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton, and Scunthorpe, as well as his time as England manager.
Keegan's death, announced earlier this week, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the football community and beyond. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was seen laying flowers outside St James' Park, joined by numerous supporters paying their respects. Both Newcastle and Liverpool football clubs are currently in discussions to determine the most appropriate way to honour Keegan's life when they meet for their opening Premier League fixture of the new season on Sunday, 23 August 2026. Newcastle United also plans to consult with Keegan's family regarding options for a permanent memorial.
