Kieron Pollard, the former West Indies all-rounder, has etched his name into the annals of Twenty20 cricket history, surpassing compatriot Chris Gayle to become the format's leading run-scorer. The 39-year-old right-hander reached the significant milestone while representing MI New York in Major League Cricket, where he scored a century, pushing his career T20 run tally to 14,583. This achievement places him just ahead of Gayle's long-standing record of 14,562 runs.
Gayle, often referred to as the 'Universe Boss' for his explosive hitting, had held the coveted record for over twelve years, having first claimed it in March 2014. His last competitive T20 appearance was in 2022. Pollard's extensive career has seen him accumulate 1,569 runs in T20 internationals, with the vast majority of his runs coming from various domestic and franchise T20 leagues across the globe, showcasing his enduring presence and impact in the shortest form of the game.
The shift in the record books highlights the evolving landscape of T20 cricket and the longevity of its top performers. Interestingly, this record could be contested again in the near future, with two prominent English batsmen in close pursuit. Former England opener Alex Hales currently sits in third place, just 134 runs behind Pollard, while England's white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, is in fourth position, 212 runs adrift. Buttler is expected to feature in up to eight T20 matches for England between July and September, offering him a clear opportunity to challenge for the top spot.
Pollard's landmark century, only his second in T20 cricket, came during a 30-run defeat for MI New York against Washington Freedom. His unique position as the only middle-order batter among the top six run-scorers further underscores his versatility, as the other five players primarily operate as openers or top-order batsmen. Beyond his batting prowess, Pollard also holds the record for the most T20 appearances, having played an astonishing 736 matches.
Currently, Pollard is balancing playing commitments with coaching roles. He served as the batting coach for Mumbai Indians during the recent Indian Premier League season and is set to take on the head coach position for MI London in the men's Hundred competition later this summer. While Gayle still holds the record for the most sixes in T20 cricket with 1,056, Pollard is not far behind, trailing by 70 maximums, further illustrating his power-hitting capabilities throughout his illustrious career.
