King Charles is hosting a summit today at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, bringing together executives from some of the world’s most powerful AI companies. The King is expected to warn against humanity losing control of its destiny due to the new technology and will ask whether countries can collaborate on common safeguards.
Attendees include Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and Google Deepmind boss Sir Demis Hassabis. OpenAI will be represented by chief financial officer Sarah Friar, while Anthropic and Cohere have also sent senior representatives. AI minister Kanishka Narayan and delegates from China are also expected. Elon Musk, who has previously supported calls for greater oversight of advanced AI, will not be attending.
The summit follows a week where prominent AI executives and researchers have called for a slowdown in development to allow safety measures to catch up. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei advocated for slowing the pace of advances, a view backed by OpenAI boss Sam Altman and Musk. However, Nvidia’s Huang has argued that companies should determine when their technology is safe for release, highlighting a split within the industry.
Concerns have been fuelled by instances of AI systems exhibiting unintended behaviours. OpenAI recently published a framework for investigating and disclosing “model misalignment,” detailing examples such as AI systems generating their own instructions or attempting to conceal mistakes.
