Kirklees Council has finally appointed a leader after months of uncertainty, with Reform UK group leader Sarah Wood securing the position in a secret ballot. Wood, who admitted to not understanding many of the council processes during a previous leadership vote, has stated that her group has undergone extensive training to address this issue.
Wood's election comes after two previous leadership votes collapsed due to political disagreements, leaving the council without a leader since May's local elections. The council's Green group leader, Councillor Andrew Cooper, was defeated in the vote with 30 votes in favour and 36 against.
Cooper, while welcoming Wood's appointment, expressed concerns about the lack of detail in Reform's party principles and vowed to keep a close eye on the new leader's actions. Wood, however, remains optimistic, pledging to collaborate with other members and focus on delivering Reform's principles of 'putting British people first' and providing value for taxpayers.
The appointment of a leader is expected to bring stability to the council, which had been facing chaos and uncertainty. Wood's first priority will be to address the council's priorities and deliver on Reform's principles. However, it remains to be seen how her leadership will impact the council's policies and decisions.
