American triathlete Taylor Knibb has claimed her first Hawaiian Ironman world title following a dramatic conclusion to the race. Defending champion Solveig Løvseth of Norway had led Knibb by over a minute with a mile left, having taken the lead inside the final 10km of the marathon run.
However, Løvseth experienced a sudden collapse, allowing Knibb to pass her approximately a kilometre from the finish line. Løvseth later recovered to finish eighth. Knibb completed the event, which includes a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle, and 42.2km run, in eight hours, 36 minutes and 29 seconds.
In the men's race, Vincent Luis of France, aged 37, secured the world title on his debut at Kona. Luis, who had previously won Olympic bronze in Tokyo and world championship series titles in 2019 and 2020, finished in 7 hours, 47 minutes and 27 seconds, holding off Gustav Iden.
