The Communications Minister, Anika Wells, has challenged the Coalition and the Greens to support legislation that would strengthen the eSafety Commissioner's powers. This legislation is related to the existing social media ban for individuals under 16 years old.
Labor intends to seek passage of this legislation in Parliament this week. If passed, it would enhance information-gathering capabilities to investigate non-compliance by social media platforms concerning the ban. Additionally, the maximum penalty for breaches would be doubled to nearly $110 million.
Minister Wells stated that the Albanese government introduced an urgent law to strengthen eSafety's enforcement powers more than two months ago. She added that Australian children and parents needed these laws eight weeks ago, but the Coalition and Greens sent the bill to an eight-week inquiry.
