Senior Labour Party figures have stated that future cooperation with the Green Party is very unlikely. This follows the Green Party's adoption of a policy that treats Zionism as a form of racism.
One Labour minister said they could not foresee how the two parties could work together. A government official suggested Labour should formally rule out a future coalition or other arrangements with the Greens.
The Green Party's policy, which also calls for a single Palestinian state, was adopted at their conference on Sunday by 1,022 votes to 813. Bridget Phillipson, the Labour chair, described the move as “shameful”.
The Liberal Democrats are also facing internal pressure to end existing arrangements with the Greens. Some senior Lib Dems have called for an end to their coalition with the Greens in Southwark, south London.
A byelection in Holborn and St Pancras on Thursday will be a test for the Greens, who are campaigning to win the seat from Labour. Green co-leader Zack Polanski is seeking to win the seat, which was formerly held by Keir Starmer.
