A woman has been found guilty of causing the death of her friend in a crash on the M62. Humaira Batool, from Bradford, was driving a rented Lamborghini Urus when it struck a barrier and caught fire, killing 20-year-old Mohammed Shaan Hussain.
During a trial at Leeds Crown Court, jurors heard that Ms Batool drove the supercar at speeds of up to 143mph in wet conditions near Ripponden, West Yorkshire, in the early hours of 21 December 2022.
Ms Batool, 26, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. She is due to be sentenced on 2 November.
The court heard that Mr Hussain, also from Bradford, had rented the vehicle and initially drove it, before switching places with Ms Batool at traffic lights. Ms Batool told the court she had "panicked" and taken the wheel after Mr Hussain insisted she drive as he was unable to.
Witnesses who had been overtaken by the Lamborghini stopped to help after the crash, but attempts to reach the occupants were thwarted by flames before a "very significant explosion", the prosecution said. Ms Batool was found on a grass verge with serious injuries, while Mr Hussain was trapped in the wreckage and suffered fatal injuries.
West Yorkshire Police's Det Insp Paul Conroy said the force welcomed the jury's verdict, adding: "We always maintained she was responsible for her own actions in choosing to drive the car to speeds up to double the speed limit, and she must now answer for the incredibly dangerous driving she demonstrated on that night."
