Former Australia coach Justin Langer has hinted at a potential interest in the vacant England Test coach role, despite confirming no contact has been made. Langer, currently leading the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred, has emerged as a favourite to succeed Brendon McCullum, who was sacked earlier this month.
Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Langer stated, “I haven’t heard from anyone. It’s all paper talk.” He acknowledged the England head coach position as one of the three biggest coaching roles globally, alongside Australia and India, adding, “I’m passionate about the game of cricket but mainly about Test cricket.”
The 55-year-old, who played over 100 Tests for Australia and coached the side for four years, suggested that in global cricket, coaches consider all opportunities. He also commented on the new coach needing to work alongside McCullum, who retains his limited-overs role, saying it “can (work) if you’ve got the right people.”
Meanwhile, Australia coach Andrew McDonald believes former captain Ben Stokes could return for next year’s Ashes series. Stokes retired from international cricket last month but continues to play for Durham. McDonald suggested a return would create significant hype for the series.
