The heart-wrenching incident in Canoga Park has left a community reeling after Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers fatally shot a two-year-old doodle named Jameson on Saturday evening, just minutes after the family had celebrated their beloved New York Knicks' basketball championship victory. The tragic events unfolded when officers were dispatched to an apartment following a report of a screaming woman – subsequently identified as an ecstatic fan celebrating her team's win.
According to LAPD statements, officers received direction from a caller and upon arrival, they encountered the resident, who was briefly confronted by a large, barking dog wearing a Knicks jersey. The officers reportedly requested the resident to secure the animal, but when the door reopened, Jameson allegedly charged at one of the officers, leading to the fatal shooting.
The disturbing aftermath of the incident is captured in a viral TikTok video, showing approximately a dozen uniformed officers standing nearby while a distraught woman lies over the lifeless body of her pet. The footage raises questions about police procedure and the handling of such situations. Locals can be heard expressing their concerns and questioning the necessity of lethal force.
Jeremiah Garcia, who has launched a GoFundMe appeal for Jameson's cremation, described the dog as "the sweetest boy in the world." The initiative, aimed at covering cremation costs, has seen an outpouring of support from the public, exceeding its target of approximately £10,000 by more than tenfold.
The Los Angeles National Action Network advocacy group held a press conference on Tuesday, demanding transparency and accountability. Najee Ali, senior organiser for the group, labelled Jameson's killing as "unnecessary and unwarranted" and called for the immediate release of police body-camera footage and the identities of the officers involved, highlighting the public's right to know.
