A man from Leamington Spa discovered he was to become a father just days after a sudden bleed on the brain left him paralysed from the chest down. Liam Watson, 29, was rushed to hospital in February 2026 after experiencing numbness in his legs and difficulty breathing, following an initial period of back pain that escalated rapidly.
Liam's condition, diagnosed as a spontaneous epidural haematoma, required urgent surgery. While recovering a week later, his wife Poppy delivered the news that they were expecting their first child. This came as a particularly poignant moment for the couple, who had previously experienced a miscarriage.
Poppy described the pregnancy as a "little miracle," highlighting the unlikelihood of them conceiving naturally again with such ease given Liam's injury. The couple's world has irrevocably changed, and they are now focused on adapting their lives and home to embrace parenthood fully.
Six months on from the incident, Liam remains paralysed. To enable him to play an active role in caring for their baby, the Watsons have launched a GoFundMe page. They are seeking to raise funds for crucial adaptations, including a power attachment for Liam's wheelchair to facilitate longer distances and off-road use, as well as specialised baby equipment. This includes a cot with a lowered side, an adjustable height changing table, and a pram designed for wheelchair users.
Despite the immense challenges, including Liam not being expected to regain the use of his legs, the couple expressed a growing sense of hope for their future. They are determined to create a loving and supportive environment for their forthcoming child, navigating the complexities of their new reality together.
