Leeds Baby Bank, a charity providing essential items to families in need, is facing increased demand and has issued an urgent appeal for donations. Chantal Nogbou, the founder, reported a "massive increase" in referrals from health and social care professionals in recent months.
Since the start of June, the charity has supported 550 families in Leeds, with numbers expected to rise as winter approaches. Nogbou noted that many families struggle to manage bills, including rising energy and fuel prices, while also needing to provide for their children.
Government statistics indicate that 27% of children in the Yorkshire and Humber region live in relative low-income families. Nogbou also highlighted that approximately 70% of the children the charity helps have at least one working parent.
The increase in demand, coupled with the costs of moving to a larger building and rising utility bills, presents financial challenges for the charity. Nogbou emphasised that community donations of items and money are crucial for the charity's continued operation.
