The wheels are in motion, and A.Gain is pulling out all the stops. The Leeds United co-owners' investment group has sealed a major coup by acquiring a majority stake in Real Zaragoza, the historic Spanish club plunged into third-tier football just last season. This savvy move brings A.Gain's multi-club ownership model full circle, with the group now firmly at the helm of LaLiga's Aragonese outpost.
Real Zaragoza, a club steeped in tradition and boasting a thrilling Copa del Rey win in 2004, has been given a much-needed lifeline. A.Gain is poised to build on the club's rock-solid foundations, mobilising the passionate fanbase and leveraging their regional identity to craft a sustainable long-term strategy.
This latest deal cements Real Zaragoza as A.Gain's second fully-owned football venture, joining Deportivo Cali in Colombia. The group also maintains a minority stake in Atletico Madrid, alongside Apollo Sports Capital and Ares Management – a diverse portfolio that's certainly making its mark on the global football stage.
Bobby Aitkenhead, managing director and chief executive of A.Gain, is clearly enthused by the purchase. "We're laser-focused on clubs with a proven track record, loyal supporters, and long-term growth potential," he declares. "Real Zaragoza ticks all those boxes – an extraordinary history, a fanbase that's unbreakable in their devotion, and a rich vein of untapped opportunity just waiting to be mined."
The A.Gain juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down. As international investors continue to take a stranglehold on Spanish football clubs, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gerard Pique, and Lionel Messi are also wading into the fray – a clear indication that the Iberian peninsula is about to get an awful lot more exciting.
