The legendary Leigh Halfpenny is back in the fold – this time as an integral part of Steve Tandy's coaching team! The renowned former Wales full-back has joined forces with his national squad, taking up the role of interim kicking coach for the Nations Championship. Having hung up his boots at the close of last season, this appointment marks a highly anticipated return to Welsh shores for Halfpenny.
Halfpenny's wealth of experience and expertise will undoubtedly prove invaluable, particularly for the younger members of the squad. He brings with him a unique blend of on-field nous and coaching acumen – a potent combination that will no doubt inspire those around him. "I'm thoroughly looking forward to getting stuck in with the group," Halfpenny exclaimed, his enthusiasm palpable.
This is not, however, a new chapter for Halfpenny – he has already dipped his toes into coaching waters last summer as part of Wales' tour of Japan. The role was then held on a part-time basis by Rhys Patchell during the autumn internationals and Six Nations; but with Patchell's departure to Benetton, the door swung open for the former British and Irish Lion.
Halfpenny's credentials are nothing short of spectacular – 801 points in 101 Tests for Wales, placing him third on the nation's all-time list behind only Neil Jenkins and Stephen Jones. A player-coach at Cardiff last summer cemented his commitment to a coaching pathway, while his final professional outing saw him feature in their vital win against the Stormers in May.
