Leny Yoro Sees Red as Manchester United Fall to Atletico Madrid in Champions League

Manchester United's Leny Yoro was sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity, contributing to their Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid.

  • Leny Yoro received the first red card of his career for a foul on Jonathan David.
  • Atletico Madrid doubled their lead shortly after Yoro's sending off.
  • Manchester United have now gone five games without a victory.

Manchester United centre-back Leny Yoro was sent off during their Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, receiving the first red card of his career. The 20-year-old was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity after putting his arm across Atletico forward Jonathan David.

Referee Glenn Nyberg initially awarded a free-kick against David, but reversed his decision after a VAR review, despite what was described as a light touch from Yoro. Atletico Madrid capitalised on the numerical advantage, doubling their lead within minutes of Yoro's departure, with Ademola Lookman scoring after a shot from David was saved.

Former United striker Wayne Rooney commented on Prime Video that the "soft" red card left the visitors with "no chance" of salvaging a point. This defeat extends Manchester United's winless streak to five games. Their next match is an away fixture against rivals Leeds United in the Premier League on Sunday.
