The scorching summer heat has left a trail of devastation across the UK, with forecasters warning that temperatures in London could soar to 32C this week. Amidst this backdrop, the Liberal Democrats have launched a damning critique of the Government's failure to address Britain's woefully inadequate housing stock in the face of escalating climate change.
Under their proposed 'climate ready' programme, the party is calling for new legislation that would make air conditioning or alternative cooling systems mandatory features in all newly built homes across the UK. They also want essential public buildings, including schools and health facilities, to be brought under this requirement.
Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrats' environment spokesperson, said recent heatwaves have exposed Britain's lack of preparedness for extreme heat, placing a heavy burden on families. 'We need a new plan that compels developers to build homes that are properly insulated and equipped with air conditioning,' he urged. 'These homes must be fit for the future.'
Gideon Amos, the party's housing spokesperson, highlighted that UK homes are among the smallest and hottest in Europe, making air conditioning increasingly essential. He criticised previous Conservative governments for allegedly removing minimum space standards, contributing to the current challenges.
Stark statistics from recent heatwaves in May and June have underlined the severe risks posed by extreme temperatures. Researchers at Imperial College London estimated that approximately 2,700 people died during this period, with a peak daily fatality rate of around 440. The analysis indicated that over 40% of these fatalities would not have occurred without the 1.4C of human-caused global heating experienced to date.
