Twenty years after co-creating the iconic Motorola Razr, Kaiwei Tang, co-founder of Light, is re-entering the flip phone market with a new, simplified device. Light, known for its minimalist Light Phone, is set to release the Light Flip, a colourful and budget-friendly alternative designed for those seeking a break from smartphone dependency. This move comes as the company observed a growing demand, particularly among younger generations, for flip phones that offer better build quality than current options.
The Light Flip aims to combine the company's custom software with a tactile, non-touchscreen experience. It will incorporate the same Light Phone operating system, offering essential tools such as an alarm, calculator, and calendar. Unlike its more expensive predecessor, the Light Phone III, which retailed at approximately £630 (based on a $799 USD price), the Light Flip significantly reduces the cost to around £230 by foregoing a touchscreen, NFC reader, and selfie camera, and opting for a plastic casing over aluminium. This material choice also allows for a vibrant range of colours, including black, red, yellow, pink, navy blue, and light grey.
Despite its minimalist approach, the Light Flip is equipped with modern connectivity. It supports both 5G and 4GLTE, enabling users to download podcasts and play uploaded music via a 3.5mm headphone jack or Bluetooth. The device features a 2.8-inch OLED screen internally and a small external light to indicate notifications without needing to open the phone. It charges via USB-C and is compatible with both eSIM and physical Nano SIM cards, featuring a 12-megapixel camera on the rear.
Light is also exploring financing options to make the device more accessible. While details for the UK market are yet to be confirmed, the company has piloted phone contracts in the US. If a similar scheme were introduced in the UK, customers might be able to acquire the Light Flip for around £31 per month on a two-year contract, making the upfront cost more manageable for some consumers.
Pre-orders for the Light Flip are currently available, with an anticipated shipping date of April 2027. Recognising the extended lead time, Light has launched a 'Flip Your Life' programme, which includes bi-weekly newsletters to help pre-order customers prepare for the transition to a simplified phone lifestyle. This initiative aims to build a community and support network around the device, facilitating a smoother shift away from constant smartphone engagement.
