The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, an iconic symbol of American heritage, has been embroiled in controversy as its newly refurbished 'American flag blue' protective liner has begun to fade to a greyish hue. This unexpected development has raised serious questions about the quality of work and the escalating costs of renovation efforts initiated by Donald Trump's administration.
What was initially estimated to cost $1.5 million has ballooned to an astonishing $16 million, with the project facing numerous setbacks since its completion last month. The issues began with reports of an algae bloom in the water and pieces of the new coating peeling off the bottom within days of being refilled.
The renovation contracts, including a $1.7 million agreement with Ohio-based Green Water Solutions for a water-purification system and a $14.7 million contract with Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings for repainting and waterproofing the pool's concrete floor, have been widely scrutinised. Trump's assertion that the repairs would last for over a century has been severely undermined by the rapid deterioration.
The former President has repeatedly blamed vandals for the peeling paint and other problems, despite there being no conclusive evidence to support this claim. Critics of the administration argue that the issues are rooted in substandard repair work, rather than malicious acts. The Interior Secretary, Doug Burgum, whose agency oversees the National Park Service, has stated that after debris from Independence Day fireworks is cleared, the plan is to “Repair the vandalism that was done and fill it back up again.”
Meanwhile, legal proceedings are underway regarding alleged damage to the pool. Court documents indicate that the National Park Service reported a 9th June incident involving a sharp knife or razor cutting the new liner. Former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn has pleaded not guilty in D.C. superior court to deliberately damaging the reflecting pool, with his legal team and other Trump administration critics arguing that he is being scapegoated for poor workmanship. At least three other individuals have also been charged with misdemeanours for allegedly removing pieces of paint, all of whom have pleaded not guilty.
The controversy surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool project comes as part of a broader pattern of high-profile initiatives spearheaded by Trump across the capital. Other notable projects include the demolition of the White House’s East Wing for a $400 million ballroom and plans for a towering arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
