History was made under the scorching summer skies of Donington Park last night, as Linkin Park cemented their place in Download Festival lore by becoming the first-ever band with a female lead vocalist to headline the hallowed event. Emily Armstrong, a name that's been both welcomed and scrutinised since joining the fold in 2024, took centre stage alongside Mike Shinoda, reigniting the flame of a legendary rock institution.
The road to this momentous occasion has not been without its twists and turns. Following the untimely passing of Chester Bennington in 2019, Linkin Park's reformation in 2024 sent shockwaves through the fan community. Armstrong's appointment sparked debate, with some questioning her past associations with the Church of Scientology and a convicted individual – allegations she has since publicly distanced herself from.
Undeterred by the initial controversy, Armstrong's arrival on stage was met with an outpouring of adoration from fans, who celebrated this trailblazing moment in rock history. Shinoda playfully acknowledged the significance, quipping that his new partner "hates this kind of attention", before inviting a sea of women to form their own mosh pit during 'Two Faced' – a heartwarming tribute to Armstrong's groundbreaking achievement.
The setlist was a carefully curated blend of classic anthems and fresh material, including the haunting 'The Emptiness Machine', the emotional 'Crawling', and the timeless 'Numb'. A sneak peek at their upcoming film, 'Unshatter', also left fans abuzz, with Shinoda reflecting on the band's rebirth: "the hardest part of ending is starting up again." Completing the revamped lineup are drummer Colin Brittain and founding guitarist Brad Delson – the latter contributing to new music despite not being on tour.
Shinoda has consistently maintained that this revised chapter in Linkin Park's story is not about erasing the past, but about evolving. The band's decision to retain their name, yet forge a new path, was on full display at Download 2026 – a testament to their unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and honouring their legacy.
