Fire brigades across the United Kingdom are now tackling a lithium-ion battery-related blaze every five hours, new figures reveal, highlighting a significant and growing safety concern. Data collected through Freedom of Information (FoI) requests by an insurer shows that brigades responded to 1,760 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries in 2023. This represents a substantial increase of 147% over a three-year period, with 710 such incidents recorded in 2020.
The ubiquitous nature of lithium-ion batteries, which power a vast array of rechargeable devices from mobile phones and electric toothbrushes to e-bikes and e-scooters, has led to fire chiefs warning that public awareness and government regulation have not kept pace with the inherent risks. These fires can be particularly dangerous due to their rapid onset, intense heat, and the release of toxic gases, often making them challenging for firefighters to extinguish.
The surge in incidents underscores a critical challenge for both emergency services and policymakers. While the convenience of portable electronic devices is undeniable, the safety implications of their power sources are becoming increasingly apparent. Experts suggest that factors contributing to these fires include the use of incompatible or faulty chargers, overcharging, physical damage to batteries, and the purchase of uncertified or counterfeit products.
Addressing this escalating hazard will likely require a multi-faceted approach. Fire services are advocating for enhanced public education campaigns to inform consumers about safe charging practices, proper battery disposal, and the dangers of cheap, unbranded charging accessories. Furthermore, there is a growing call for the Government to review and potentially strengthen existing regulations regarding the manufacture, import, and sale of lithium-ion battery-powered devices and their associated charging equipment.
The Fire Brigades Union has previously highlighted concerns about the safety of these batteries, particularly in relation to e-bikes and e-scooters, which have seen a significant rise in popularity. The sheer volume of devices containing these batteries in homes and workplaces means that the risk is widespread, impacting all sectors of society. Without concerted action, the upward trend in these dangerous fires is likely to continue.
The Department for Business and Trade, responsible for product safety, may face pressure to consider new legislative measures or update existing standards in light of these concerning statistics.
