New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has outlined the club's transfer priorities for the current window, pinpointing the acquisition of a winger as a non-negotiable requirement. Speaking to reporters during Liverpool's pre-season tour in Chicago, Iraola acknowledged the need for significant recruitment following several high-profile departures and ongoing injury concerns.
The Reds have already brought in two players this summer: defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, a deal initially agreed in January, and forward Victor Munoz from Osasuna. However, these arrivals are set against the backdrop of key exits, including star forward Mohamed Salah, defender Andy Robertson, and centre-back Ibrahima Konate. The departure of transfer guru Michael Edwards has also added complexity to their summer strategy.
Iraola remained cautious about committing to a specific number of new signings but emphasised the urgency of replacing Salah. "There are obvious situations where we need to sign players. Winger for example, we definitely need to sign a winger," Iraola stated. He added that other positions would depend on market availability, cost, and an assessment of existing squad depth, particularly given a number of players like Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley, and Giovanni Leoni are currently sidelined with injuries.
Addressing speculation surrounding the future of veteran goalkeeper Alisson, 33, Iraola was unequivocal. He stressed the importance of the Brazil international's experience, alongside figures like Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, in helping new and younger players adapt. "He's someone that definitely will help us in this process of adaptation of the new signings, of the new players, the young players," Iraola affirmed.
Similarly, the manager dismissed rumours linking midfielder Alexis Mac Allister with a move to Spain. The 27-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract and will rejoin the squad after his post-World Cup break, is considered a vital component of Iraola's plans. "Alexis has been one of the best players of the club last year... I want to keep my good players," Iraola commented, indicating his focus is on strengthening rather than weakening the squad.
