Liverpool Football Club has honoured the 39 fans who lost their lives in the Heysel Stadium tragedy with a new memorial at Anfield Road. The poignant ceremony, which took place on the 41st anniversary of the devastating event, was attended by representatives from both Liverpool and Juventus, including Ian Rush, who played for the Reds during the 1980s.
The Heysel Stadium disaster occurred on 29 May 1985, before the Champions League Final between Liverpool and Juventus. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of 39 fans, with over 600 more injured. In a statement, the club acknowledged the ' profound impact' of the tragedy on the football community and paid tribute to the victims and their families.
